Welcome to Sports For All
Sports For All is a nonprofit organization that allows students in the Chicagoland area to access the benefits of sports without the financial barrier of lacking access to functional equipment.
What Is the Problem and Why?
The chart above from the Harvard Undergraduate Open Data Project shows how almost all of the sports listed above are less accessible to low income students.
The problem is that lower income children do not have an equal opportunity to participate in sports due to the high cost of the following:
Costs of registration, equipment, travel, lessons, camps, etc.
Enrollment costs
Not being able to afford the 'recommended' extra coaching, physical therapy, personal trainer, gym membership, etc. that is suggested by a coach
Overall benefits:
Sports offer many benefits to students, physically, mentally, and academically, fostering their development in various aspects of life.
We believe that these benefits must be accessible to every child, not just the ones that can pay to play.
Physical benefits:
Helps maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints
Helps control weight
Reduces obesity rates
Prevents chronic disease
Mental/social benefits:
Decreases risk of depression and anxiety
Promotes positive self-esteem
Develops children's goal setting and leadership skills
Provides children with a safe community despite cultural or political divisions
Academic benefits:
Association with higher grades and standardized test scores
Promotes enhanced concentration, attention, attitude, class behavior, and time management
Athletes are more likely to attend college and get a degree
This chart captures the main physical, mental/social, and academic benefits of physical activity. Some examples include physically active children being 1/10 as likely to be obese, showing lower levels of depression and self-derogation with higher self-esteem, and having 15% higher chances of going to college.
How It Works
At Sports For All we focus on collecting gently used or new sports equipment and distributing them to local school districts, churches, food pantries, and community centers that are in need of equipment.
This equipment ranges from gear to clothing items. All items are welcome as long as they are in a functional condition and do not carry logos.
Parties receiving the donations are able to fill out a form requesting what equipment they need and a specified amount.
